What changes the price of custom earplugs?

Two quotes can look different even when both say “custom earplugs.” Compare the full service, not just the price of a pair.

  • Plug type and intended use. A solid workplace noise plug, a filtered musician’s plug, and a specialized communication mould have different designs and components. Ask for the type that suits the job rather than assuming that the most expensive option provides the best protection.
  • Ear impressions and fitting. Confirm whether the quoted price includes taking impressions, manufacturing the plugs, checking the fit, and instructions for wearing them.
  • Filters, cords, clips, and storage. These may be included or priced separately. Check the exact configuration on the quote.
  • On-site service and order size. For employers, the number of workers, location, scheduling, and any return visit can affect the total project cost. Ask for a per-person and total price.
  • Fit support and replacements. Ask about the remake period, lost or damaged plugs, and whether hearing protection fit testing is included or quoted separately.

What should an employer include in the budget?

Start with the number of workers who need protection, then ask for an itemized quote. The useful total is the cost of getting properly fitted plugs into employees’ hands—not just the price of the mould itself. Are custom earplugs cheaper than disposable plugs?

They cost more up front. Whether they cost less over time depends on how often each person uses hearing protection, how many disposable plugs the workplace goes through, and how long the custom pair remains usable. Do not assume a fixed payback period.

For a simple comparison, divide the price of a custom pair by the number of workdays you expect it to be used. A $250 pair used on 200 workdays each year for three years would cost about $0.42 per use. That is an illustration, not a durability promise or a Rocky Mountain price. Compare it with your actual disposable-plug spending and include replacement and fitting costs on both sides.
